You probably know how many hours you're in the office, but do you know how much you're working? And if you do, how many of those hours spent on work you bill? How much are you giving away?

Measure what matters... & time always matters

If you don't track the time you and your staff spend on a client's matters, you can't be sure the relationship is profitable. Most likely the 80/20 rule holds- 80% of your profit comes from 20% of your clients- but it might not be the same 20% that brings in the most revenue. You can have a high revenue stream and still lose money on a client if he's not paying the full value of the work you are delivering.

How often should you bill?

It's makes me crazy when solos spend little bits of time here and there doing billing activities.  Unless we're talking large, non-repetitive bills, I've always advocated monthly billing, done consistently on a standard monthly timeline. I still advocate that, but I'm willing to increase the frequency.
